Triple Snood

I’ve got a few goals for our summer, once we’re officially done with school and have returned from our last two June conventions. I want to update the photo album (the last ones that got printed, labeled, and entered into the album were from June 2007. Yes, 2007.) Also, I would like to learn to sew. I know some basic hand stitching but haven’t used a machine since making an apron in Home Ec class in 8th grade. I’ve recently done a few small, hand-sewn projects. Here’s a set of matching snoods I made for the girls with some fabric I had laying around:

Can’t wait to get the machine out and try skirts! 🙂 If you have a link to any EASY project ideas, feel free to share!

  1. Huh. I didn't know that's what those were called. I'd love to know how to make them. Did you use a pattern?

  2. I was surprised to discover that "snood" is just a fancy name for a hair net, LOL. These are just a sewn fabric version, instead of the traditional crocheted type.

I didn't have a pattern…I had purchased a fabric snood from an Etsy shop (Garlands of Grace) a while back, and it seemed simple enough. I just tried to mentally de-construct it and size it down for the girls.

Essentially, it's a hemmed rectangle with an elastic sewn in along the bottom edge. (The short sides of the rectangle should roughly be equal to the measurement around the top of the head from ear to ear, plus about 1 inch for hems and sewing the ends.)

There are fabric ties sewn in at the ends of the elastic edge (the elastic holds the hair in and then the ties can be tied underneath and tucked into the snood; this helps it remain secure.)

To sew it all together I flipped it over (wrong side up) and zig-zag folded it (kind of like a fan) until the front and back edges met, then sewed each end together with a straight stitch all the way across. Once you turn it right-side out and put it on, these unfinished edges tuck into the snood so they aren't even noticeable.

Not sure you can follow my directions…I know I'm the type that needs a picture. 🙂 I tried looking around online for a fabric snood pattern and saw a couple, but they were a lot more complicated than this one.

  3. You've taken three pretty girls and made them look ugly and weird.

Do you really think that covering their hair makes them more modest? who is looking at them sexually anyway?

They are not even thinking about sex, and here you are worrying they are not modest enough. Who is the one who is being immodest?

  4. "Anonymous,"

You have made several false assumptions, and those based on a single photograph. I wish only to respond to one part of your comment: "You've taken three pretty girls and made them look ugly and weird."

1 Peter 3:3 says, "Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight." It is based on this definition that I hope all will judge my daughters' beauty.
